Digital Eye Strain

Digital Eye Strain in Punta Gorda

Digital Eye Strain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is an increasing problem for both adults and children, as technology becomes more and more prevalent and our dependence on screen time grows.

Approximately 80% of Amercian adults report using digital devices for more than two hours per day. Of those, 67% report using two or more devices simultaneously. It is not surprising then that 59% of adults report experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain.

Are You Experiencing The Following?

  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Red, tired eyes
  • Double vision
  • Eyelid twitching
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain

If so, chances are you have some form of digital eye strain. Don’t worry, there are things we can recommend to mitigate eye stress and tension.

Alleviating Digital Eye Strain

Of course, reducing time spent on your devices is the best solution to relieve digital eye strain. However, that simply may not be an option for some. Here are some strategies that can help.

Not only can the blue light emitted from your computer, tablet, or smartphone cause digital eye strain, it has also been linked to sleep disorders. Today, there are special blue light filtering specialty lens coatings that can help. Ask about blue light filtering options at your next appointment.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break from your screen and look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This allows your eye muscles to relax, even for a short time. This practice can alleviate symptoms of stress and strain on your eyes.

Our optometrists can offer several workspace adjustment recommendations to alleviate digital eye strain. Things like ensuring your screen is an arm’s length away, adjusting screen brightness, and correcting the angle and positioning of your keyboard and monitor can all help reduce symptoms. All of these ergonomic adjustments can help to keep your eyes healthy and in check.
