Diabetic Eye Exams In Punta Gorda

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 100 million Americans are currently suffering from diabetes or prediabetes. And in Florida alone, this number is 2.5 million people, with almost 25% of cases being undiagnosed.

These are startling numbers. Not only does this put people at a much higher risk for vision loss, but diabetes is linked to heart and kidney disease, stroke and other conditions.

That’s why at Center For Sight, we cannot stress enough how important frequent and comprehensive Diabetic Eye Exams are for patients that already have the disease, and for those who are borderline diabetics and require more rigorous eye testing and diagnosis.

Why a Diabetic Eye Exam?

In addition to Adult, Senior, and Children’s Eye Exams, Diabetic Eye Exams are one of the most frequent and important eye exams we do.

Not only are individuals with diabetes at a much higher risk of developing certain eye conditions, diabetic eye diseases are currently the leading cause of blindness in American adults, with approximately 25% of those with diabetes showing some form of the disease.

Our Diabetic Eye Exams are conducted to detect a range of diabetic eye diseases that can form when there is an excess of sugar in the blood. These conditions include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Did you know? Many eye diseases are asymptomatic, meaning they will often not display symptoms until some aspect of vision has already been compromised.

That’s why it is essential to have a diabetic eye exam at least once per year in order to properly monitor eye health and possible disease progression. However, if we feel more rigorous or frequent testing is required, we will recommend a specialized and unique management plan.

State-Of-The-Art Technology

At Center For Sight, we firmly believe that staying up to date with the newest technology is key to providing our patients the best possible care. We are knowledgeable and skilled in the following cutting-edge medical technology, allowing us to identify problems sooner and provide better outcomes for our patients.

A wide-angle retinal camera, the Optos Daytona takes images that cover approximately 80% of the retina at once, in a single non-contact image. Because of its aperture and ability for high quality scans, the patient’s pupil does not require dilation before use.

The OptoVue provides a cross-sectional scan of the internal structures of the retina and optic nerve. It is extraordinarily helpful in evaluating age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Diopsys is a type of non-invasive electro-diagnostic device that assists in the early diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other diseases of the eye and visual system.

The Keratron Corneal Topographer maps the curvature of your cornea. This device is used for contact lens fittings, identifying astigmatism, and detecting more serious eye conditions such as keratoconus.
