Children’s Eye Exams in Punta Gorda

Good vision is key to a child’s physical development, success in school, and overall well-being. Establishing an early and frequent eye exam routine is an excellent way to involve your child in their vision care and develop healthy eye habits. At Center For Sight, our primary goal is to protect your child’s vision while making eye care fun.

How Do I Know If My Child Is Experiencing Vision Problems?

It can often be very difficult to ascertain whether your child is experiencing vision problems. Depending on their age, they may be unaware their vision is compromised or simply unable to communicate the problem. Even if your child has regular eye exams, it is important to note the following symptoms of compromised vision:

  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Excessive blinking
  • Squinting or covering/closing one eye or head tilt
  • Holding objects close to their face while reading
  • Sitting too close to the television
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Performing below potential
  • Inability to maintain eye contact
  • Otherwise unexplained clumsiness

The symptoms above can be systematic of eye problems and other issues, so it is important to call and make an eye appointment in order to rule out any visual concerns.

Your child’s first optometric eye exam should be between 6 and 12 months of age. However, if you notice any issues, such as a white pupil or poor focusing, they can be seen earlier.

Between the ages of 3 and 5 years, a child’s vision and eye alignment should be assessed. Using a number of child-friendly tests, we will determine whether your child can properly focus at far and near distances. In addition to visual acuity, we will also test their binocular vision and confirm that their eyes are healthy.

Upon entering school, and from the ages of 6 to 17, children should be tested on an annual basis. Myopia (nearsightedness) is the most common refractive error in this age group and can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Other tests include eye alignment and ocular health testing.

Early detection of vision problems is key to your child’s overall health, development, and happiness.
