Why Do You Need To Have Regular Eye Exams? Hero

Why Do You Need To Have Regular Eye Exams?

When your eyes are working the way they should be, it is often fairly easy to assume you are completely fine and skip your annual eye exam. After all, you can see just fine, your prescription hasn’t noticeably changed, and you are healthy. While skipping your exam may be tempting considering that you have so many other things on your plate, we would urge you not to. Seeing your eye doctor is fast, easy, and imperative. If you still don’t think you need your annual exam, however, continue reading below.

You Could Have An Eye Disease

There are many eye diseases that exist that do not have apparent symptoms at first but that in the long run can cause serious problems for your eyes. If handled in a timely manner, you could easily have these diseases managed. However, if you skip your exam, you will not know they even exist until the horrible side effects begin to appear. Some of the most common eye diseases that affect people’s vision over time are as follow:

  • Glaucoma Could Be Threatening Your Eyes
This is sometimes referred to as the “sneak thief of sight” because it is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. This disease develops without any sort of symptoms and before you know you it, your vision begins to fade.
  • Cataracts Are Far More Common Than You May Realize
This condition occurs when there is clouding in the lens of the eye that causes a person’s vision to become impaired. Approximately 91 percent of Americans over the age of 75 have cataracts in their eyes.

What Else Can Impair Your Vision If You Skip Your Annual Exam?

One of the main reasons we see people experience a degradation of their eyesight over time is that they are using the wrong prescription in their glasses or contacts. Vision changes occur gradually over time, and this means that you may not be aware that yours is changing, even though it clearly is. When you continue to use a prescription that is out-of-date for your contacts or glasses, it can cause you to squint or to get headaches throughout the day. You may think that neither of those consequences sounds that dire, but prolonged use of the wrong prescription is sure to damage your eyesight in the long run. This is also why it’s important that you continue to visit the same optometrist regularly over the years so that any major changes in your prescription will be obvious to the doctor, even if they are not obvious to you.
